Sunshine Breaks in Lanzarote
Spain is home to some superb holiday destinations – and chief amongst these are the perennially popular Canary Islands. Which are geographically speaking much closer to the African continent than Europe. A position that results in a superb semi tropical, year round climate.
For a while the Canaries earned something of a downmarket reputation, largely as a result of offering cheap winter sun breaks. Providing an affordable alternative to the Caribbean for sun starved Northern Europeans. Today however all this is changing and islands such as Lanzarote offer plenty to attract the sophisticated independent traveller. As well as traditional package holiday tourists.
Lanzarote is located closer to the African coast than the other islands and has a drier and more arid climate as a result. Much of the island, especially in the south, is largely devoid of trees and vegetation. With a weird volcanic landscape that was created during the 18th century by eruptions which went on for over six years. Today this part of Lanzarote, which is called Timanfaya, is one of the best known National Parks in Spain and attracts hundreds of thousand of tourists ever year. Along with film makers and photographers who all delight in using this twisted terrain as a dramatic backdrop for their work.
Tourism is concentrated in three, well contained modern resorts. With plenty of accommodation choices available – ranging from luxurious Lanzarote villas and hotels through to good value studio apartments. Head for the two largest resorts of Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen to find the widest range. Or if you are looking for something different then there are a number of very chic rural fincas and hotels, such as the Finca Salinas in Yaiza. Which is located just a short ten minute drive from the volcano park.
The island´s capital city of Arrecife is also worth considering for those who like to get off the main tourist track. As whilst it is a bustling city it is not a holiday resort as such. Despite having a great beach – Playa El Reducto – at its centre. As well as the Arrecife Gran Hotel – one of just six 5 star hotels in Lanzarote.
The real heart of the island though lies in the countryside and tourists are urged to get out and explore. Driving around the island is easy and car hire in Lanzarote is cheap too – starting at just €15 per day. With loads of great natural wonders, beautiful beaches and delightful little white washed villages to discover.
