Hvar, a Croatian Town with Historical Landmarks Well-preserved since 4th Century BC



Hvar is town located in the south coast of the island Hvar in Croatia. The landscape is quite steep and is rose from the Adriatic Sea. Nevertheless, there are still some agricultural activities taking places on terrains with main produces being olives, vineyard, lavender and rosemary. The coastline is scattered with small gravel beaches in the bays.

Hvar enjoys Mediterranean climate, meaning that yearly temperature is warm and mild, with only 2 months would have temperature dropped below 10 °C. Best season to visit Hvar is summer and autumn, where temperature would be around 20 °C.

Stari Grad, the Old Town

Stari Grad, the Old Town, owns a number of magnificent historical landmarks, including the Stari Grad Plain, which is the 7th Croatian site protected by UNESCO. The Stari Grad Plain on the island is an agricultural landscape that was set up by the ancient Greeks in 384 BC on the north of the island, which is still remained in use until today. The agricultural area is large and still kept in the original layout, preserved by stone walls which has been standing there for over 24 centuries, with water collection system available. From there you will still see the same crops, mainly olives and grapes growing in the same plain as in the ancient Greek time.

Town Square

The Town Square of Hvar, located at the heart of the town, extends from the waterfront to the Cathedral. Sized 4500 m, the square owns a city Well dated back to 1520. The square itself was fully paved in 1780 while the buildings around the square, including the Bishop’s Palace, the Arsenal the Arsenal, the Governor’s Palace and other public buildings are dated back to 15th to 17th century.

Spanish Fortress

Hvar Town is encircled by protective walls, and overlooked by two massive fortresses set on the hills . One of the fortress is the Spanish Fortress, as known as Tvr?ava Španjolo. It was built in 1579 after the old fortress built by the Venetians are devastated. The fortress now is renovated to include a tourist complex which gives a superior view overlooking the town and its surroundings. Another fortress on the hill is the Trdava Napoleon Fortress, which was built during Napoleonic’s rule. Nowadays the fortress is used as an observatory.

Getting to Hvar

Getting to the Hvar Island is possible by flying to the International Split Airport. From the airport to Hvar City by speedboat is about an hour, while by ferry is approximately 2 hours.
