Funchal on Madeira Island – the Garden Island in Portugal



The Madeira Island is an autonomous region of Portugal, widely known as the island of eternal Spring, or the Garden Island in Europe. Madeira is made up mainly by 2 populated Islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, with some smaller unpopulated islands scattered around.

Fuchal is the capital and the busiest city on Madeira Island. It is a yearlong popular place for tourist to enjoy the annually nice weather.

 Getting There

 The airport serving the island is the Funchal Airport, also known as Madeira/ Santa Catarina International Airport, located nearby city of Santa Cruz. Flying from Lisbon requires 1.5 hours, while from most cities in mainland Europe & UK needs around 3 hours to get there.

Funchal is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. The name ‘Funchal’ is derived by the major produce of fennel (funcho in Portugese) of the city. From 15th to 17th century, the city was an important shipping center.

Today, the city attracts thousands of tourists to witness the beauty of both Madeira Island and the city of Funchal. Below are the highlights in Funchal:

São Lourenço Palace

São Lourenço Palace (Palácio de São Lourenço) was the first fortress built in Funchal, between the years of 1529 and 1540. Many alterations, extensions and architectural improvements were made since then until 19th century. The palace served as residence for many captains and governors.

 Today the Palace hosts a permanent exhibition on the history and development of the fortress. Highlights include the Noble Salon, the Audience Hall and the lush palace gardens.

Sé Cathedral

Sé Cathedral, located at the central point in Funchal, is one of the most-visited monuments on the Island. Constructed between 1493 and 1517, the Cathedral’s ceiling is uniquely made from local wood.

Madeira Botanical Gardens

 Madeira Botanical Gardens (Jardins Botânicos da Madeira) is the major attraction of the island. Owning to the yearlong Spring weather, the Garden owns more than 2000 different plants on this hillside located garden. The Garden is close to region of Caminho Meio Quinta do Bom Sucesso, which is approximately 3km from Funchal city center.
